Closed Eyes

If you close your eyes
It will appear as if
The darkness is
Right behind the lids

And when you do so
Long enough it makes
The light beyond them
Your only escape

For the darkness is
Going to engulf
In one of two ways
That will result

With either sleep silently
Slipping you into its bosom
With lullabies and rest
Its welcoming cushion

Then allowing closed eyes
To flutter open awake
And again in life
Begin to partake

Another possible result
Of the darkness behind
Closed eye lids
Is the inability to rejoin

The light of life
Never again to see
Or feel or hope
Or think or be

Either way the darkness
Behind eye lids continue
To flicker on us and
Our semi permanence
