In The Line

Again, standing here in a line

Bobbing my head around

Like a dashboard dog.

Trying not to make eye contact

Or getting caught staring.

But to appear cool, waiting.

So I stare at that blank spot

On the wall or the floor

Or read signs that I’ve read before

The device has its usual ailments

No wifi, loading snail slow or

Shut off from a dead battery

I should have brought a book

Or a periodical like mommy did.

Learning can happen anywhere.

Finish that paragraph, or chapter

Meet a new mysterious character.

Give my mind a place to wander.

Instead of stand here in a line

Bobbing my head around

Like a dashboard dog.
